Glendon Camping Grounds

1st – 4th October 2021

The postponing of the 2021 Corroboree, due to COVID, saw us scramble to find an alternate location for the Labour Day long weekend. Thanks to Murray and Julie-Anne for the idea and Becca for making it happen.

We couldn’t have found a better location to accommodate our large group. Glendon Camping Grounds gave us our own area. A lovely green field ‘across the creek’.

A few of us decided to make the most of the long weekend and avoid a potential wet weather setup arriving on Wednesday. Others chose Friday or Saturday to arrive. Poor Heike and Udo were the only ones to end up setting up during the rain.

While the weather forecast for the first few days didn’t look good we were blessed with amazing weather overall.

Glendon is a place where you can participate in your choice of activities including prospecting, motor bike riding, fishing and of course 4WDing. Our members had a go at it all.

Due to our large numbers we split up into smaller groups as we did some ‘tag-along-drives’. It was a safer option and more practical as the grounds are primarily for motorbikes.

Some of our members took the opportunity to do some 4WDing for the first time including Jo and myself. I’d really like to thank our team for being such great coaches and encouraging me to get out of my comfort zone. If your looking for someone to sit beside you and be an extra set of eyes Heike is your person. Udo may have something to say about that but you can only ask ha,ha.

Rose was so encouraged she ended up driving the car and camper home  to Brisbane. Bob said she did a great job. At the club we do talk about the importance of each member knowing how to drive off-road or even towing if you have camper, caravan or trailer. You never know when you may have to be the one behind the wheel.

It was a special weekend for our social media guru, Rhiannon who celebrated her birthday. A bunch of went over to the Royal Hotel at Leyburn for dinner. The hospitality and food at this pub, established in 1863, was first class. At the end of the meal we sang Happy Birthday to Rhiannon and shared her colourful birthday cake.

Ross and Karen used pots to catch Blue Claw in the creek. They harvested enough for anyone interested to have a try.

Special thanks to Greg for making damper for us to share. We’re giving him a score of 10/10 in the taste test.

Troy and Andrew gave fishing a go. Unfortunately for them and us (we’re sure they would’ve shared) they didn’t hook anything.

It was great to have Don, Anika and Greg join us on their trail bikes. We were able to watch them put their skills to the test on the steep hills and tracks. They put safety first with their gear and the way they approached the terrain.

Andrew, Guy, Udo, Andrew, Troy and Morrissey had ‘gold fever’ with them all trying their hand at gold prospecting. The metal detectors were busy finding old nails, lead shot (shot gun pellets) and rusty tin. We’re pleased that both Morrissey and Andrew did strike gold. Eureka!!

It was lovely camping on the green grassy site at Glendon. We were also able to have a fire each night. With such big numbers getting a spot close to the fire was challenging. It was beautiful sitting under the stars, chatting and roasting marshmallows.

Check out Andrew’s drone footage on our Facebook page. It shows the beauty of the place and us getting together for afternoon tea.
