RIIVEH305F Operate and Maintain a 4WD Vehicle

Our 4WD Driver Training course is a nationally accredited training course.

It is only available to current financial members of Bayside Off-Roaders Club. The course is fully accredited by ASQA and is part of the Resource and Infrastructure Industry training package.

The course is presented and assessed by qualified Trainers/Assessors and RIIVEH305F Statements of Attainment are issued by 4WD Queensland Training (RTO Code 5286)

Course Description:

Our basic four wheel drive course teaches you how to operate and maintain a four wheel drive vehicle while you perform a broad range of four wheel drive skills in varied contexts, using your discretion and judgement when selecting equipment, services or contingency measures.

During this course you will:

  • Identify four-wheel drive specific terms, terminology and techniques
  • Plan for minimal environmental impact
  • Perform pre-departure checks on a four wheel drive vehicle
  • Use a four-wheel drive vehicle to cross different terrains
  • Co-ordinate the recovery of a four wheel drive vehicle
  • Perform maintenance and minor repairs on a four wheel drive vehicle

Course Duration:

This driving course is conducted over two full days. Please note that this course has changed from our previous one day course to a two day course, as the course requirements have changed. Some assessment must be done twice to comply with Government assessment requirements.

Course Location:

Our course is delivered over a weekend at Janowen Hills 4WD Park, 1570 Inverramsay Rd, Goomburra QLD 4362

Training Course Costs:

  • Single driver in their own four wheel drive – $110.00
  • Additional driver in the same four wheel drive – $80.00

There will also be the additional cost of camping at Janowen Hills 4WD Park. Currently the camping fees are:

  • Adults: $17.00 per person, per night
  • Children (5 – 15 years): $7.00 per child, per night
  • Children 4 years and under are free
  • Powered sites (limited): $7.00 per night
  • Weekend 4WD track fees: $30.00 per vehicle

Each participant is responsible for their own camping equipment and supplies for the duration of the course.

As an example, the cost for a couple to attend our RIIVEH305F Operate and Maintain a 4WD Vehicle course would be:

  • 1 x Single Driver = $110.00
  • 1 x Additional Driver = $80.00
  • 2 x Adults for 1 night = $34.00
  • 1 x Track Fees = $30.00
  • TOTAL COST= $254.00

Course Structure

The RIIVEH305F Operate and Maintain a 4WD Vehicle course is a very hands on practical training course. It consists of your instructor leading you through:

  • Initial Candidate sign-in and student induction
  • Four wheel drive theory presentations and discussions, including static practical presentations using a four wheel drive vehicle
  • A short four wheel drive theory questionnaire/assessment
  • Hands-on practice and assessment in many different aspects of driving a four wheel drive vehicle over the two days of the course

Theory Topics Covered

The following topics are covered in the theory sessions:

  • Pre-start & post-operational checks, securing loads, vehicle fault finding
  • Legal requirements, policies and procedures, land access
  • Driving techniques – night driving, wet roads, outback dirt roads, animals, environmental impacts
  • Journey management – driver fatigue, using a GPS, trip procedures, radio communication, weather restrictions
  • Four-wheel drive systems – differences between two wheel drive and four wheel drive, part-time four wheel drive vs. constant four wheel drive, free-wheeling hubs, differentials
  • On & off road driving techniques – hazard identification, route planning, traversing different terrains
  • Vehicle recovery methods – forward and reverse stall stop recovery, recovery boards (e.g. MaxTrax), recovery straps
  • Emergency procedures

Practical Component

On our RIIVEH305F Operate and Maintain a 4WD Vehicle course you’ll have practical training in your own four wheel drive vehicle covering the following skills:

  • Pre-start and post operational checks – load security, fault repair
  • Journey management – water, food, GPS, route planning, staying in contact etc.
  • Driving on sealed and unsealed roads, emergency braking
  • Driving on uneven terrain, up and down hills, on sand, in mud, over rocks
  • Using the vehicle jack to support a four wheel drive on unstable ground
  • Vehicle recovery methods – forward and reverse stall stop recovery (manual vehicles only), recovery boards , recovery straps, etc.
  • Basic maintenance: changing fuses and light bulbs, charging a battery, jump starting a vehicle
